Cool, free designery iPhone backgrounds

Artists and illustrators have generously shared tons of free backgrounds for iPads and iPhones. Some of my faves are the sweater wallpaper at Mr. Handsomeface, graphic animal backgrounds from Wee Society (with instructions for making them into DIY Halloween costumes for kids!), and this lady by Simone Massoni. Browse through the other beautiful, bountiful options at Poolga, too, including new, free wallpapers for the iPhone 5.

Geometric desktop wallpapers

I made myself some quick desktop wallpapers that are simple and modern, designed with just criss-crossing lines. They remind me of diamond facets or constellations or spider webs. You can download your favorite color: orange, aqua, pink or gray. Files are 2560x1600px to accommodate big monitors. I use the "fit to screen" option.

Free mathematician wallpapers

Michael Campbell has created a series of posters featuring Euclid, Fibonacci, Newton, and other geniuses of math and science. The poster backgrounds with their subtle gradations are available as computer wallpapers here. I just added the blue-green design to my desktop to change things up. (Briefly.) My desktop usually likes to be orange, of course.

Artistic wallpapers for iPhones and iPads

Screenfunk is a collection of illustrated wallpapers for iPads and iPhones, posted by designers and illustrators. I wouldn't want a phone adorned with monsters, skeletons, or profanity, but there are other interesting images in addition to the creepy stuff. Links to the wallpapers shown above: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6.

Mid-century chair desktop wallpaper

Fans of iconic mid-century furniture (and a few newer classics) will love this set of free desktop wallpapers from David Vineis, a French digital artist and designer. The actual chairs would cost me an arm and a leg, which I need to keep, but I'm happy to admire their images on my computer screen at no charge. Download the whole collection as a .zip file at the bottom of David's page.

Vintage illustrations as desktop wallpaper

Dali desktop wallpaper

This desktop wallpaper with a humorous Salvador Dali quote is an oldie but goodie by Brooke Francesi. It's from Design Milk's Designer Desktops series, and I just applied it to my monitor. It's like waving a red flag in front of a bull. I'm determined to prove old Salvador wrong. What did he know, anyhow? His floppy clocks would never function in the real world, and his skinny little mustache can't compete with the likes of Burt Reynolds or Ron Swanson. Surely he could have worked a little harder. Humph.

Retro desktop wallpapers

Morning, all. Hope you had a great Easter/Passover weekend. My parents visited from Minnesota and hit the road a bit ago for the nine-hour drive home. After a lovely weekend of fancy food, site-seeing, and Jersey Boys, it's back to business as usual (but with Rag Doll stuck in my head). To kick off the week, I freshened up my desktop with this orange wallpaper from Fossil. Check out their latest selection of vintage-style desktops here.
